      One of the old customs of May Day in Ireland was to protect your home and heard of cows from the Cailleachs (hags or old women). These old hags would steal butter, milk, and even cows in the early morning of May Day. Popular Irish folkltales include the Otherworld (An Saol Eile), which revolves around the idea of supernatural manifestations and beings appear in many of the folkloristic genres such as ballads, popular song, legends, memorates, belief statements and folkloric material.

Type numbers were assigned to the major Indo-European tales by Finnish scholar Antii Aarne in his book (revised in ), The Types of the Folktale. For Aarne, a type was a collection of similar stories that bear a historical relationship to each other. (See The Folktale, page ).

In non-literate societies, the folktale often takes the place of the novel. Oral versions of folktale may be in decline, but the form lives on in films, novels, children’s storybooks.

Often referred to as Thompson's motif-index, the catalogue has historically received extensive use in folklore studies, where folklorists commonly use it in tandem with the Aarne–Thompson–Uther.
